IBM System P Power6

The new IBM POWER6 is the fastest microprocessor ever built and contains many technological breakthroughs that to provide twice the performance with virtually no increase in energy consumption. This new Processor technology incorporates hundreds of IBM POWER6 microprocessors on a silicon wafer which is then cut into individual chips that are then packaged and built into new IBM servers. Each 64 bit chip has two cores, runs at speeds up to 4.7 GHz (eight megabytes of chip Level 2 cache, four times that of the POWER5 chip), and contains 790 million transistors.

The first new POWER6 server, the IBM System p 570, has set 25 performance benchmark records across a broad range of business and technical applications. As with POWER5+, these latest offerings provide the hardware and software that allows it to create many 'virtual' servers on a single box.

Covenco envisage that the first POWER6 machines available in the used market should be available before the end of the year.
